Work Statement
My digital art uses dark and rich colors, worldbuilding, and fantasy elements to encourage viewers to reconsider humankind’s relationship with nature. I observe that the human ego is misleading people into thinking we’ve escaped nature’s grasp and the impact of our evolution and progress. Nature is full of depth and danger, and through my exploration of creature design and environment studies, I emphasize how the essence of the natural world is mysterious, beautiful, frightening, and most importantly, not ours to control. My art is deeply influenced by surrealists such as Martin Whitfooth, who focuses on a post-apocalyptic world in which animals we see around us presently have outlived mankind and now inhabit the world in strange and confusing ways. While my art shares post-apocalyptic themes and surrealism with artists like Whitfooth, it also draws on making peace with the weight and power of nature in comparison (and perhaps unison) with humans as a species. I aim to show a mode of existence for humans, one in which we live in harmony with the life forms we share this world with and respect that which came before us, for it will still be there when we are gone.
